My "Normal" Background

So, let's get started with a little about me...  From the outside looking in my life has probably always looked pretty "normal"... My parents divorced when I was in 3rd grade, they both re-married, I have always been good in school, went to college on a full scholarship, couldn't wait to get out on my own, met the man of my dreams as a freshman in college, always wanted to be a wife and a mom and have a successful career and I just wanted to get there as quickly as possible!!  So far pretty normal :)

But I pride myself on living "just outside the cookie cutter," so I have avoided a few of the "normal" expections.  For example, my husband "Billy Joe" and I didn't have a big wedding.  We eloped!  We felt more effort should go into the marriage than the wedding... man were we right!

As previously mentioned, we met my second semester in college.  I was 19 and he had just turned 25.  I knew right away that he was the one!  I was attending GA State Univeristy in Atlanta (studying Business Management) and he was finishing up his Associates in Criminal Justice at Chattahooche Valley Community College (Phenix City, Alabama).  When he talked about finding a bigger school to pursue his Bachelors in Criminal Justice I couldn't wait to tell him that my college had one of the best Criminal Justice programs :)  So, 6 months after we met he re-located to Atlanta.  At the time he swore it was for his education and not for me, but now he admits I had a lot to do with it :)

We moved in together about a year after we met.  We were engaged 6 months after than, then married another 18 months later.  The month we married, we also bought our first home!  Since we knew we wanted to start a family, we moved out of the city and bought a house out in the country... and by "country" I mean out past the burbs!  And, yes, our jobs were both still in the city!

Oh yeah, somewhere in there he started working for the Department of Homeland Security.  I actually started with my company a month before I met my husband (and I am still there 10 years later).  So, we both commuted 100+ miles per day.

Later that year he was accepted as a Candidate for Officer Candidate School for the Army National Guard.  A huge decision!  One that put our team-work to the test (a test we passed with flying colors, by the way)!

On our first wedding anniversary we decided to start our family.  We weren't sure at the time how many kids we wanted, but at least 2.  EXACTLY 40 weeks after we decided to start trying to get pregnant our son was born!!

The last month of my pregnancy my husband started getting sick- lots of sinus infections, migraines, etc... and I guess that's where it really starts getting interesting...
